The Antonia Award nominees for 2026 are now chosen. The jury has seen 30 productions throughout the season, and four have been chosen as nominees. In addition to those mentioned below, the jury may also nominate one more production. The award will be given out on Saturday, 6 June at Hangö Teaterträff’s festival club. The nominees are:

Åbo Svenska Teater: Vi ska ju bara cykla förbi

(Dramatisation of Ellen Strömberg’s novel, directed by Ida Kronholm)

Motivations: “A story about the fragile yet vital friendship between teenage girls, and about the vulnerability and humour found in a teenager’s longing for life to begin. Having actors in their 30s and 40s play teenagers can go terribly wrong, but here Mathilda Kruse and Daniela Franzell manage to make the dialogue and interaction feel authentic, and director Ida Kronholm has struck exactly the right note for the play’s world.”

Sirius Teatern: This is NOT Stalker

(Text by the ensemble, directed by David Sandqvist)

Motivations: “Waiting for rights that never came. At a Russian border post in 2037, the theatre collective Sirius Teatern finds itself stranded on its quest to secure the rights to stage a theatrical adaptation of the cult film Stalker. The group’s protracted wait in no man’s land becomes increasingly chaotic, absurd and comical. Why are they there? Who is Tom? This is NOT Stalker is a quest for a right to exist and the indisputable value of art.”

Teater Mars: Tre systrar

(By Anton Chekhov, directed by Joakim Groth).

Motivations: “A production is revived after thirty-one years and, in a strange way, comes closer to its true self. It is rare to find theatre that understands its text with such depth. We truly get to see Chekhov. In all its simplicity, a revolutionary opportunity.”

Teater Viirus: Af Klint

(Text by Essi Rossi, Iida Koro, Susi Siriya Orenius, directed by Essi Rossi)

Motivations: “With exquisite visual design, Teater Viirus tells the extraordinary story behind the creation of Hilma af Klint’s esoteric art. The narrative takes a leap into the subconscious and resurfaces in our own bewildered modernity, where her works are exhibited in the world’s leading museums. But fame has a downside. af Klint’s ecstatic depiction of the spiritual universe is drowned out by art-world chatter that views her works merely as exclusive collector’s items. Viirus rescues these works from their silent captivity on fridge magnets and tote bags in a shimmering performance that literally puts visual art centre stage.”
