Zaare – a form of welcome in the Farefare or Frafra language, also known by the regional name Gurenne (Gurene). The language is a Niger-Congo language spoken by the Frafra people of northern Ghana.”

Welcome to brunch! During the last day of the festival, we look forward to launching our new three-year project. The project, which kicks off this fall, is curated by Antonia Atarah. The project builds on Antonia’s performative installation Don’t thank for the food, which premiered at the 2024 festival and which aimed to make BIPOC art visible with a low threshold and a focus on wellbeing and care.

Following the success of the installation, the festival is now launching the ZAARE project, which aims to increase the visibility of BIPOC artists in the Finland-Swedish theatre field and create a platform for diversity and representation. With this project, the festival wants to take concrete steps to change structures and make room for more voices. This year we’re kicking off the project by hosting a summer brunch on the festival centre’s lawn.

In the festive setting of the brunch, Antonia, together with her father Linus Atarah, will cook West African and Caribbean food, symbolising the fusion of cultures and traditions. The day also includes an artist discussion with Linus Atarah on cultural heritage and a panel discussion exploring what we can do to increase diversity and accessibility not only at Hangö Teaterträff but in the Finland-Swedish art field at large. Are we behind on the issue of representation? What are we not seeing? Where are the real active decisions we need to make?
